Wurst Apparatus
The perceived need for citizens to become ‘consumers’ has encouraged certain kinds of alienation from nature, the production of goods (especially food) and finally the own body as it is seen as functional performance accessory. In the consumer world of the 21st century the development tends to a mass customization to full fill the need for individualism and to increase the economic flow.
What if common and traditional food such as sausages are produced in dependency of the human body state? What If the whole production process becomes transparent and linked to the individual? Would we enjoy the high grade of individualism? Would it be disgusting or a violation of privacy? How would it change our perception regarding meat production, customization and the disguise through custom made products? Sausages in general are one of the most popular meat food though it is never clear what kind of particular ingredients or parts of animals had been processed into a common and well accepted form.
The Wurst (''Sausage'') Apparatus is situated in a public marked place. To acquire a sausage the customer height, galvanic skin response and heart rate are measured and then parameterized: The taller the person, the longer the sausage, the faster the heart rate, the faster the plunger of the mincer, which can lead to air bubbles in the end product. The skin response controls a syringe that injects special ingredients such as mustard or herbs in the sausage.
